Stoney Cove is planning to sink a new wreck for divers next month.
Robert Crouch, director at Stoney Cove, said: ‘It’s taken us about nine months to find a suitable boat. It’s a little bit smaller than the Stanegarth. It’s difficult to find something safe for divers, that offers access holes big enough and plenty of headroom. We couldn’t just take the first thing that came along.’
The inland dive site says that the vessel, a 17-metre-long, 25-ton, steel tugboat called Defiant, will be sent to the bottom in mid-September. “There will be an evening event with fireworks to which all divers are invited,” says Stoney Cove director Martin Woodward, adding that the date was still to be confirmed but would be “no later than 18 September.”
On the bottom of the flooded quarry the Defiant will join another steel tugboat, the 71-ton Stanegarth, which has proved a major attraction at Stoney since its sinking at a depth of 20 metres in June 2000.
To find out more about the sinking, and to check on timing contact Stoney Cove on 01455 273089 (email: ).
We will have to sort out a Fish4Divers outing to dive the Defiant once it is sunk. Anybody interested?
