Jacques-Yves Cousteau was born on June 11, 1910, in Saint André de Cubzac, Gironde in France. One hundred years later, we are celebrating the anniversary of the man who made an indelible impression on our planet and its oceans.
Sailing in the famous Calypso he carried out underwater explorations throughout the world which luckily for us most were filmed bring amazing visions of a magical new world which few of us had ever seen or imagined. He inspired a new generation to don scuba gear and dive under the waves to discover the wonders that lay there. New innovation’s in diving equipment and of how to dive were introduced making it safer and easier to descend below the waves.
He brought global awareness of the damage being done to the marine environment and began the fight against pollution and exploitation of the seas and oceans. Achieving great success in his own lifetime his fight goes on with his foundation leading the way.
The name Jacques-Yves Cousteau will live on forever and rightly as he was truly a great man and without him scuba diving would not be were it is today and the marine environment would be in a very sorry state.
