Last week a group of divers in Destin located on Florida’s northwest gulf coast left the water with an extra layer than they started with.
They had been enjoying exploring the jetties and noticed nothing until they surfaced when the smell of oil hit them. On climbing back on board their boat it was noticeable that they were all covered in a layer of oil that had washed up from the leaking pipe in the gulf. This resulted in all their dive gear having to be washed with extra care than usual to remove the oil. Word has now got out and divers have stopped using this dive location.
As the currents move oil from the spill further afield how many more diving locations will be affected and will the diving industry on the Florida gulf coast be the next casualty of this devastating event.
We can only hope that things are rectified soon and that the local marine life and environment is not ruined forever.
