Description:

The Cathedral - Shore Dive

This was my second Adventure dive after passing my Open water and I have to say that I was anticipating more than I got lol

The Name Cathedral conjures up images of vastness but I found it to be a bit on the small side for that title lol

Accessed from the beach (Playa de la Barrilla). It is a short surface swim out of the bay and then a free descent to approx. 14m. Follow along the reef to the left and over a drop-off which leads down to the ‘Cathedral’ at approximately 32 metres. The ‘Cathedral’ is underwater lava cave formed during the volcanic eruptions, this cavern is encrusted with soft corals on the walls and ceiling. The entrance slopes gently up to the back of the cavern revealing a shimmering image as fresh water meets salt forming a halocline at the rear of the cavern. Things to see are Large Grouper, Moray eels and Rays.

On the return journey above the Cathedral you can swim through the bubble fields, created by your exhaled air trapped against the roof of the cavern. This air then filters up through the sand and on towards the surface., which funnels down towards the rear. There are alcoves of finger coral and small shrimp and glass fish at the far end and there are many soft corals on the cave walls and roof. Grouper fish are very often found there. This is also a regular hang out for some beautiful trumpet fish. Torches are recommended to explore the cave to full advantage.
