The Volnay, The Manacles, Saturday 8th August 2009

6 of us booked on a dive with Dive Action in St Keverne to dive The Volnay.  We dived from their rib down the shot to 20m.  It is rather silty down there but if you are careful it’s a nice dive.  My partner and I saw loads of life down there, lots of anenomies, star fish, sea urchins and lots and lots of fish. The highlight for me was when we ventured to the outer edge of the wreck and came upon a large shoal of what I think were large corkwing wrasse as well as bib, cuckoo wrasse and ballan wrasse.  I’m not very good at identifying fish but there were loads of them swimming around.

Apparently there are lead ball bearings and if you are lucky there are some casings from the cargo the ship was carrying when it sank but we didn’t spot any of this, too busy looking at the fish!

The lead ‘ball bearings’ are from WWI anti-personnel shells. There are still some shells there with timer heads if you know where to look and how to dig. The letter ‘O’ from Volnay was found in summer 2009.
